About Us
After 30 years working in metal trades and carpentry, Dolton Roberts was looking for a way to make best use of his skills in a business partnership with his wife, Debbie. Together they came up with Circle D Metal Art and made their first showing as such in March of 2003.
Debbie starts with an idea or photo, enlarges the drawing with an overhead projector and then fine tunes the detail to best work with the metal medium. A pattern is cut out with an exacto knife and then transferred onto sheet metal. There, Dolton takes this penciled drawing and cuts it out with a hand held plasma arc, then chips and grinds the artwork smooth. After an acid bath, the artwork is polished and skillfully heated with a torch to bring out the beautiful colors inherent in the metal; like painting with a torch. The artwork is then coated with a polymer that leaves the metal surface waterproof, smooth and shiny.
In 2004, Dolton and Debbie made their home in South Central New Mexico, coming from coastal Mississippi. They are greatly inspired by the beautiful mountains encircling their studio and enjoy handcrafting their "artwork in metal" with the Capitan Mountains and Sierra Blanca always in view.
